Why Five-a-Side Pitches Now Live Inside Steel Buildings

I have erected more than a few steel buildings that were never meant to store equipment or livestock at all. They were built to hold a full sized indoor pitch, and the request comes up more often than people outside the construction side of the sport probably realize. A clear span steel building solves a problem that a wood frame structure genuinely struggles with at this scale.

Here is what actually goes into building one of these, and why the shape decision matters more than it does for a typical storage building.

Why clear span is not optional here

A five-a-side or futsal style pitch needs an unobstructed rectangle of open floor, and a single support column in the wrong spot ruins the whole point of an indoor facility. Rigid frame steel buildings can achieve clear spans of 80 feet or more without interior columns, which is simply not practical with wood truss construction at the same scale without a forest of intermediate supports.

I have seen operators try to retrofit an existing wood frame building for this use and give up once they realize how much of the floor is unusable around support posts. Steel solves that from the design stage rather than as a workaround.

Ceiling height changes the whole calculation

Acoustics are the surprise line item

A bare steel building echoes far more than most first time facility owners expect, and untreated acoustics make a full pitch nearly unusable for coaching communication once more than a handful of players are on the floor. Acoustic wall panels or a sprayed acoustic treatment on the interior of the roof and upper walls solves most of this, but it needs to be budgeted from the start rather than added as an afterthought once the echo becomes obvious.

Ventilation matters more than owners expect

A fully enclosed steel building holding twenty or more active players generates a surprising amount of heat and humidity in a short window, and a facility designed without adequate ventilation becomes uncomfortable and eventually promotes condensation on the interior panels regardless of how well insulated the walls are. Ridge vents combined with wall louvers or powered exhaust fans keep air moving without requiring full climate control, which matters for keeping operating costs manageable on a facility that may run matches back to back through an evening.

I have walked into finished facilities where ventilation was treated as an afterthought and the difference in usability between those and a properly vented building is immediate, especially during the warmer months when a packed schedule of matches keeps the building occupied for hours at a stretch.

Flooring decisions that outlast the first turf install

Artificial turf laid directly over a bare concrete slab wears out faster and plays harder underfoot than turf laid over a proper shock pad, and the pad itself is where a lot of facility budgets get trimmed to hit a lower total number. Given how much of the total project cost is already sunk into the clear span structure and ceiling height, skimping on the surface players actually interact with every session is usually the wrong place to cut, both for player safety and for how long the turf itself lasts before replacement.
